NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Despite calls from parents to keep Jeanerette Middle School open, the Iberia Parish School Board has voted 8-4 to merge the middle school with Jeanerette Senior High.
Felicia Hearst, Jeanerette Middle School custodian and a parent of a former student at the school, said on Wednesday that closing the middle school would expose younger students to worse bullying, more pressure to have sex and other dangers than they encounter at their school.
The move will take students and staff from the middle school in Jeanerette, to the high school, located northwest of the city limits.
The Advocate reports Jeanerette Middle School has 155 students in grades seven and eight. Jeanerette Senior High has 255 students. The consolidation will start in August.
