It was a homecoming concert he's been waiting 21 years to make, Breaux Bridge native Hunter Hayes rocked the Cajundome Monday night. He opened up for Carrie Underwood on her "Blown Away" Tour.
For Hayes, it was his first chance to perform in the Cajundome.
"As of right now it hasn't clicked in my mind that I'm playing the Cajundome. I look at that building that I have been in a hundred times to watch my favorites. To watch all the shows that I have studied for years and all the shows that I was so excited to get tickets for and I couldn't sleep the night before, it still hasn't clicked," Hayes said.
Hundreds of people lined up before the doors even opened. Some fans got the opportunity of a lifetime to meet Hayes before the show.
"It was pretty amazing once in a lifetime experience. I wish it would never have ended. Right when I saw him I tried so hard not to jump out of my seat and go hug him," Katherine Rose of Metairie said.
Katherine's mother, Patty, made the trip to Lafayette as well from Metairie. The New Iberia native remembers seeing Hayes perform at the Crawfish Festival when he was four years old. She's amazed to now see him opening for superstar Carrie Underwood.
"I'm excited to see my daughter excited, but he is nice eye candy that's for sure," Patty Rose said.
Another Breaux Bridge native and former NFL Quarterback Jake Delhomme came out to support Hayes as well. He was there with his family and also remembers Hayes performing at a young age.
"He is such a class act. Not only is he a great singer, but the way he handles himself in any interview, the way he handles himself in any situation. He was raised right. I know they are very proud of him and we're very proud of him also," Delhomme said.
Hayes says he has started to think about his next album but it is very early in the process. He hopes to return to the Cajundome headlining is own tour in the future.
