BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The divisive idea to merge Southern University at New Orleans with the University of New Orleans has turned into a modest plan to switch UNO to a different college system.
UNO would be placed in the University of Louisiana System that focuses on regional campuses and can shuffle the metropolitan school away from a system where it competes for attention with the state's flagship university.
House Speaker Jim Tucker says if he can't get SUNO and UNO merged, he'll at least push to shift UNO away from the LSU System of campuses - and he's gotten the support of black lawmakers in a deal to scrap the consolidation effort.
The proposal to shift UNO to the UL System easily sailed through the Senate Education Committee on Thursday.
