Tense moments at the Iberia Parish Jail Saturday morning as three inmates take a prison guard hostage.
In the end one deputy was sent to the hospital, he's since been treated and released. The three inmates now facing attempted first degree murder of a police officer for what deputies say they did.
It was a busy morning outside the Iberia Parish Jail where a routine day for one deputy soon turned into the unimaginable.
"He was doing checks this morning and as he walked past the door, one of the inmates grabbed him and threw him in the cell and that's when they barricaded themselves in the cell," said Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal.
Deputies say the three inmates, Victor Goodman, Jeremy Richard, and Brian Segura took a guard hostage using homemade shanks. "The shanks were pretty nasty looking shanks made out of things that they use to eat with like serving trays and ball point pens."
The standoff lasted two and a half hours, and when Sheriff Ackal heard screams coming from the cell he didn't hesitate to send the S.W.A.T. Team in. "They were bruised up in the frequents. They did resist violently."
Yet, they were no match for deputies who were determined to rescue one of their own. The deputy did receive minor injures and he was taken to the hospital, treated and released. The suspects, meantime, were transported to University Medical Center in Lafayette just as a precaution.
They were also treated and released, but will soon call the State Penitentiary home.
"Let this be a lesson to the rest of them if they watch television, that I will not tolerate this crap inside of my jail and I will not deal with them with kid gloves," said Ackal.
All three of the inmates are facing attempted first degree murder of a police officer charges and several other charges are to follow.
