High Water Closing Port Allen Lock at Night

PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) - The Coast Guard is limiting the Port Allen Lock to daylight use, since the waterway to which it links is closed because of high water.
The lock links the Mississippi River to a north-south shortcut to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The waterway's Alternate Route runs from near Baton Rouge to Morgan City and the coastal waterway.
During the high water, vessels need permits to use the Alternate Route. The Coast Guard says lock personnel expect at most three vessels a day, so daylight hours are more efficient.
It will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The Coast Guard expects to reopen the Alternate Route when the Atchafalaya River falls below 7.5 feet at Morgan City. Once that happens, the lock will reopen 24 hours a day.
