Guillory says registration, payments sent to bar association

State Sen. Elbert Lee Guillory says he has sent in the required payments and paperwork to have his eligibility to practice law in Louisiana reinstated.

Guillory, speaking from the road in Chicago, said a change in bookkeepers, along with time out of the state on family matters, led to the missed deadlines and, ultimately, in a letter of ineligibility.

According to Louisiana Bar Association Member Records Assistant Sharon Lessing, Guillory was declared ineligible on Sept. 9 after several warnings to pay his dues. Lessing said that, as of noon Monday, Guillory has not paid the fees or submitted his registration paperwork for the current year.

Guillory was in the spotlight earlier this year when he changed political parties, moving from the Democratic tent to the Republican side of the aisle.

Charles Plattsmier, chief disciplinary counsel for the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board, said that this is an administrative issue which Guillory can easily fix.

"All he has to do is pay his dues, file the forms and pay the late fee, he is eligible," Plattsmier said. "Today, he is listed as ineligible."
