GRETNA, La. (AP) - An amendment banning sports play from Gretna streets has been deferred a second time by the City Council. Councilman Mark Miller, who took office July 1, requested the delay Wednesday night to seek additional information on the issue.
The Times-Picayune reports the council initially postponed action on the measure at its June meeting.
Former Councilman Vincent Cox III introduced the measure in May after a complaint from a constituent. The amendment would prohibit any sports play, from basketball to tennis, on city streets. But some officials said privately that the ordinance already legislating obstructions on city streets would address the intent of the proposed amendment.
Police Chief Arthur Lawson said in June that he had concerns about prosecuting juveniles for such an offense.
