COVINGTON, La. (AP) - The city has been awarded a $300,000 federal grant to build a 7-block sidewalk and provide a new route for students who walk to Pineview Middle School.
The Times-Picayune reports the money will be provided through Safe Routes to School, a federal program administered through the state Department of Transportation and Development.
The concrete sidewalk will begin near the main entrance of the school on West 27th Avenue and terminate at Columbia Street.
School officials say the program is designed to encourage more students to walk or ride bicycles to school.
