Gibsland mayor booked with malfeasance in office

GIBSLAND, La. (AP) - The mayor of Gibsland is free on $50,000 bond after being booked with five counts of malfeasance in office.

The Times reports that two counts accuse Odell Key of failing to pass a town budget and of paying people to attend town meetings. Another alleges he signed a contract without asking the board of alderman to appropriate money for it - and then paid the contractor after the board voted to stop all payments.

Nobody answered a call Tuesday morning to Key's home.

After a Town Hall was raided in May, Key denied allegations that records were missing and the town owed the IRS $80,000 in payroll and other taxes. The state auditor also alleged that money for taxes was taken from workers' paychecks but not sent on.
