Getting fit without the gym: Part 1

"Put the effort in now, the results will come later."

A message heard often working out with pro trainer HJ Adams.

The former college football player knows a thing or too about whipping people into shape---whether it's the New Orleans Saints or a couple beginners.

"I'm kinda like Santa Claus, I got a big bag of tricks."

This day's workout focused on fast paced, strength exercises using body weight. We decided to take advantage of the nice fall weather by taking our routine to a local park.

"Nicely done, stay there, stay there. Three, two, one, great job and relax. Good job, good job!"

Modified squats, lunges, pushups and planks. Sounds simple enough, right?

"Nice job, bend the elbows, excellent guys, great effort."

Adams says you don't need a lot of time to workout if you focus on functional and efficient moves like these. Keep up the pace and change your routine often. Most importantly---be patient.

"Don't get frustrated. You can't get in shape overnight. Give it three months and always change up your workout."

Starting a workout routine for the first time in a while or the first time ever can be a little scary, but you have to start somewhere.

"Don't be intimidated, everyone is there for the same reason, to get healthy and live a better lifestyle."
