Germany Lifts Many Dioxin-Related Farm Bans

BERLIN (AP) - Germany's agriculture ministry says it's allowing the reopening of many of the 4,700 farms closed after dioxin-contaminated livestock feed was found.
Ministry spokesman Holger Eichele said that as of Monday only 1,635 farms were still closed.
He further said some 460 dairy farms were allowed to sell their products again and that Slovakia had decided against banning German farm products.
German investigators have found excessive levels of
cancer-causing dioxin in eggs and some chicken meat. Authorities last week froze sales of poultry, pork and eggs from more than 4,700 farms as a precaution.
German agriculture minister Ilse Aigner was meeting Monday with producers of livestock feed to talk about the dioxin scandal.
