FARMERVILLE, La. (AP) - Dusty Gates will remain the sheriff of Union Parish after defeating two opponents in Saturday's election.
The News-Star reports Gates, a Republican, won with 3,283 votes, or 74 percent of the vote. That's according to complete, but unofficial, returns reported by the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office. Matt Jones finished second with 815 votes and Richie Dunn finished last with 314 votes.
Gates became sheriff in September after the death of long-time Sheriff Bob Buckley. Gates said he was excited to remove the temporary tag from his job title.
"Sheriff Buckley did an outstanding job, but we can't live in the past," Gates said. "We've got to move forward. We're going to try some different things, but they'll all be for the betterment of the parish."
