Funding & Donations Needed For St. Landry Verterans Memorial Park

St. Landry Parish Veterans Memorial Park is still under-construction...And still in great need of funding to complete. The project has been in the works for almost a decade.

Veterans like Harvey Darbonne, who fought in Vietnam, say the park has special meaning for him.

"It's established to recognized the service of all veterans and even those men and women who are serving through out the world today," Harvey Darbonne said.

As construction continues veterans like Darbonne hope the funding will continue as well.

"We've been very fortunate to date because many businesses, and individuals have come on board, but we still have a long way to go," Darbonne said.

There are several ways to help. You can sponsor a military flag for $1200 dollars, or you can dedicate a bench or pathway brick in someone's honor, or make a wall donation.

"They can donate a thousand dollars on up to get their name on that wall as well, so these are just small ways that people can play a big part in the memorial park," Project Chairman of the park, Pat Mason-Guillory said.

Brick are also available for those who didn't serve in the military. Those dedications will cost fifty dollars a piece.

Organizers say the goal of the park is to educate coming generations about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

"So they can come and walk up to that wall, and see the names of the people, who fought for our freedom," Mason-Guillory said.

If you'd like to make a donation or purchase a dedication for someone in the park you can contact the Veterans Memorial Steering Committee in St. Landry. You can also call Project chairman Pat Mason-Guillory at her office at 948-3657, ext. 264.
