Family and friends gathered to recognize the 4th Brigade Combat Team, as it prepares to depart from Fort Polk on this Flag Day.
The unit is deploying as part of the upcoming summer rotation of forces operating in Afghanistan. Roughly 1,230 Soldiers will make up the brigade. Soldiers will advise, and when necessary, assist their Afghan counterparts to further establish a secure Afghanistan.
As Brigade Commander, Colonel Mario Diaz says he is responsible for each soldier. During the last 3 months, soldiers have prepared themselves mentally and physically for the mission ahead. "Their success is our success, and what we can do day in and day out is make sure is that when they need us we are there. When they don't need us, they're going to be victorious and that's going to send the strongest message to the world," says Diaz.
The deployment send-off came on the day the Army was born; today is the Army's 238th Birthday!
