The former St. Martinville assistant chief of police is suing the city for alleged age discrimination. Nary Smith filed the complaint in federal court last week. Smith says in the suit the city fired him when he turned 65 last February. The suit claims Smith's termination came despite the fact the police department had three other employees older than 65 at the time of his dismissal. Smith is seeking reinstatement, back pay, and legal fees.
