Former Jennings chief pleads guilty to malfeasance

The former chief of the Jennings Police Department has pleaded guilty to two counts of malfeasance in office.

Johnny Lassiter entered the plea this morning just before his trial was scheduled to begin.

Lassiter was accused of stealing drugs and other items from the Jennings Police Department evidence room. He was also charged with theft, obstruction of justice, and injuring public records, but those charges were dropped in exchange for the plea.

According to state law, Lassiter faces up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine. A sentencing date has not been set.
