The former Executive Director of the Church Point Housing Authority is facing embezzlement charges. Sarah Robert resigned from her position a year ago. According to court documents, Robert embezzled almost 200 thousand dollars. The theft allegedly starting back in January of 2009.
Robert first stepped into her position as head of the housing authority ten years ago. She resigned in January of 2011 after an audit revealed a discrepancy in funds. That's the same time the
Church Point Housing Authority hired attorney Brad Andrus.
Andrus, said "I was hired as a result of an audit report to check things out."
He said after looking into the housing authorities finances, the numbers just didn't add up. He says federal embezzlement charges didn't come as a surprise.
"I can't comment directly on what I found because the Inspector General is now heading up the investigation," he said.
The audit released in May suggests Robert, identified only as a former staff member, misused agency funds and received bonuses based on false criteria. She was allegedly aided and abetted by an accomplice, Arthur Felix, who did not work for the housing authority. As for the current financial state of the housing authority, Andrus said its just fine.
He explained, "the housing authority, financially is in good shape, actually great shape."
Felix is facing the same embezzlement charge as Robert. Mayor Roger Babineaux said he was shocked to find out about the charges. He explained, she did a lot of great things for the town during her ten years as Executive Director.
Robert and Felix are due in federal court January 25 for their arraignment.
