Family Comments on Police Shooting

A man wanted in connection with a stabbing Friday night in Lafayette was shot and killed by a Lafayette Police Officer.

That officer pulled the driver over on the Evangeline Thruway and when he approached the vehicle, police say 46 year old Anthony Sonnier backed up and hit the officer. That's when the officer opened fire, killing Sonnier.

That man's family speaking out to KATC'S Chris Welty.

The officer involved in this case is on paid administrative leave and the Louisiana State Police is investigating the shooting. It is standard procedure for Lafayette PD anytime there is a shooting involving an officer. I did reach out to the Sonnier family and they declined to talk on camera, but say there are many unanswered questions as to why this happened.

Anthony J. Sonnier better known as Tony was 46 years old. His family says he was a kind man and well known in the community and mowed his neighbors lawns. They don't know why he would allegedly stab a man and steal his car, especially a man that he has known for quite some time. The name of the 74 year old stabbing victim is not being released but family members say he picked up Tony that night and they received the news early Saturday morning.

I did also reach out to the family of the stabbing victim and they declined an on camera interview but tell me that the man is expected to have a full recovery. Sonnier's family say his son died in a car crash several weeks ago, and every since he hasn't been the same.
