Trees of Hope, concluded tonight at Evangeline Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel with an awards ceremony and the presentation of $10,000 in donations to local non-profit organizations.
Fifteen local non-profit organizations from the area were invited to participate in Trees of Hope, a friendly tree decorating competition. After each charity decorated their tree, the public turned out to vote for their favorite.
Boys & Girls Club of Acadiana, the top vote-getter, was presented a $5,000 prize for first place. Second place, $2,500, went to March of Dimes, while the St. Landry Evangeline Sexual Assault Center received $1,000 for third place. The other 12 participating organizations each received $125.
The trees will be on display through December 25th. The display begins near the valet entrance at Evangeline Downs, and extends to the Fast Track Rewards Club.
In addition to the top three vote-getters, additional participants in this year's contest included:
American Heart Association; Autism Society of Acadiana; Creole Heritage Inc.; Grand Coteau Cultural Foundation; Opelousas General Health System - Paint the Town Pink; Opelousas Kiwanis Club; Opelousas Main Street; Racing Employee Assistance Program; Rotary Club of Opelousas; Opelousas Lighthouse Mission; United Way-St. Landry/Evangeline; and Curry Golden American Auxiliary - Unit 514.
