LAFAYETTE - Lavinia Tataran, Tonice White and Kaylee Nemeth each recorded double-digit kills for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team, but unforced errors at the net helped South Alabama rally to a 16-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 victory in a Sun Belt Conference match on Friday at Earl K. Long Gym.
Freshman Mechell Daniel posted a double-double with a match-high 15 kills with 11 digs while Jessica Lewis added 12 kills as South Alabama (6-10, 1-5 SBC) snapped a five-match losing streak. Emily Hundt recorded a double-double for the Jaguars with 27 assists and 10 digs while Kiki von Piekartz had 13 assists and Kelley Little 12 digs.
Louisiana (12-8, 2-4 SBC) hit .200 in the opening set and never trailed after a service ace by Kristen Armstrong gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 5-4 lead. The Jaguars, who hit .000 in the opening set, got as close as 16-12 after a Ragin' Cajun attack error, but Louisiana would pull away to claim the opening set.
South Alabama heated up in the second set, hitting .250 (14-5-36) from the floor while the Ragin' Cajuns were limited to .152 (11-6-33). Daniel tallied six kills and hit .455 as the Jaguars built a 20-14 lead before withstanding a late Ragin' Cajun rally. Louisiana got as close as 21-19 before a kill by Lewis, along with kills by Symone Stephenson and Daniel tied the match at intermission.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who had 32 hitting errors on the night along with nine service errors and five blocking errors on defense, built an 11-7 lead in the third set before South Alabama rallied. Daniel gave South Alabama a 20-19 lead before back-to-back aces by von Piekartz and a Ragin' Cajun attack error gave the Jaguars a 23-19 advantage that would be capped by kills by Daniel and Mallory Moore.
South Alabama, which hit .217 for the match, posted its best percentage of the night (.310) in the fourth set and Daniel and Lewis combined for eight kills. The Jaguars opened with a 7-3 lead on a kill by Lewis. The Ragin' Cajuns got as close as 12-10 on a kill by Andrea Hole, but three straight attack errors by Louisiana and a kill by Moore gave South Alabama a 16-10 lead.
White and Tataran recorded 12 kills each to lead Louisiana while Nemeth added 10. Hole dished out 40 assists for the Ragin' Cajuns and added 13 digs for her 11th double-double of the season while Tataran added 11 digs for her fifth double-double. Caitlyn Auxilien led all players with 15 digs while Sara Mossakowski matched a career high with 13.
Louisiana returns to action on Sunday when it entertains defending Sun Belt champion WKU in a noon contest at Earl K. Long Gym.
