Erath Mourns the loss of Mayor George Dupuis

An Acadiana mayor is mourned after losing his battle with cancer. The town of Erath is in mourning this evening after losing longtime Mayor George Dupuis. Dupuis died yesterday afternoon at his Erath home at the age of 63.

In Erath today, flags flew at half mast for a man that, many say, helped Erath back from brink of destruction.

Attorney Robert Vincent says, "George was the steward for the town of Erath through two of the most traumatic events in the town of Erath. Hurricane Rita pushed flood waters into the town in 2005 and flooded about 90 percent of the homes and businesses. Three years later Hurricane Ike comes through and pushes the flood waters through Erath again. But George was there, in the line, passing out supplies and food to people and encouraging them to come back to Erath."

The Lafayette native turned Erath resident was the first mayor in 60 years to be elected twice without opposition. Those who worked with Dupuis say it's because he put friendship before anything else.

"T-Bob" Domingues, Erath's Mayor Pro-temps says, "You can just about go to any city in this area, and they're going to know George Dupuis. And I think that's going to stand on it's own I think. They know him well and speak highly of him."

Those I spoke to today said Dupuis was a progressive mayor, building necessities and relationships that will grow Erath for years. And even though the "heart" of the city will be missed, he will never be forgotten by those who will carry on his legacy.

"George has set the groundwork for us, and all we have to do is continue. For me personally, there will always be a part of George Dupuis in my heart," says city councilman John LeBlanc.

Visitation for Mayor George Dupuis is tomorrow from 11 am to 9 pm at David Funeral Home in Abbeville. A rosary will be held at 7:00. On Wednesday, visitation will resume at 8 am until funeral services at 3 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Erath.
