In Amelia, hundreds of employees are on alert after rumors that McDermott Incorporated may leave St. Mary Parish.
So far, no comment from McDermott Incorporated on whether they'll be leaving. Currently, five hundred people are employed, the lowest number the company has seen in years.
A deal with BP would have brought in nearly two thousand new jobs, but that fell through. St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin says he's heard rumors of the plant moving to Mexico. So far, those rumors have not been confirmed.
Representative Joe Harrison is working with Mcdermott to try and make sure they stay in this area.
Louise Denly with McDermott Inc. released this statement to KATC saying, "Our Morgan City facility is currently operating with a backlog of work. We did recently reduce our work force at the yard in response to current work demand. Like any construction company in the offshore oil and gas industry, from time to time, we must adjust our workforce to be in line with our work in-hand."
