LAFAYETTE, La. - After batting .500 and driving in eight runs with two home runs, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns catcher Lexie Elkins has been named the Sun Belt Softball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Elkins picked up her second conference player of the week honors and first since the first weekend of the season on February 10.
"[Elkins] is a rock solid player in the middle of our lineup," associate head coach T.J. Hubbard said. "You can count on her to either get on or drive somebody else in. The top three or four of our lineup have been very consistent and had a very competitive attitude all season."
Elkins drove in the eventual game-winning runs in the weekend opener and keyed both the Cajuns' six-run fourth inning in game two on Saturday and the team's four-run fifth inning on Sunday with a home run and an RBI single.
Her second POW honor marks the fourth this season for the Cajuns with Christina Hamilton (March 17), and Natalie Fernandez (March 24) earning the others.
The Cajuns will go back to non-conference play this week with a Wednesday game at Northwestern State at 6 p.m. They will return to SBC play for the weekend when they take on South Alabama in a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lamson Park.
