Early Surge Propels Bobcats Past No. 2 Cajuns, 10-3

LAFAYETTE, La. - Texas State scored 10 runs in the first five innings to defeat the second-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team 10-3 in the second game of the series on Saturday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

The loss drops the Cajuns to 38-6 overall and 17-3 in the Sun Belt, while the Bobcats move to 24-19 on the year and 12-8 in league play.

"We gave up too much early," associate head coach Anthony Babineaux said. "Carson (Baranik) left some balls up and so did the guys who came in from the pen. Sometimes its just not there, and sometimes you just have to give credit to the guy that is throwing the baseball against you. (Taylor) Black did a great job of commanding the zone and he was able to get his pitches where he needed to be successful."

Black held the Ragin' Cajuns to three runs scattering 10 hits in eight innings of work to move to 4-4 on the season. The right-hander did not walk a batter in the outing and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts.

Baranik took the loss for Louisiana falling to 8-1 on the season after surrendering six runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings with two walks.

Freshman Reagan Bazar had a good outing in relief holding the Bobcats scoreless in a career-high four innings with two strikeouts a walk and gave up two hits to close out the game.

The Cajuns were outhit for the second straight contest by Texas State, 15-10. Both Cory Geisler and Garrett Mattlage had three hits and two RBI for the Bobcats.

Tyler Girouard led Louisiana offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Blake Trahan increased his hit streak to 15 games and his on base streak to 20 games with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first.

Texas State grabbed the lead in the top of the second on a triple to left by Tyler Pearson scoring Ben McElroy from second. Pearson later came in to score on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0.

Caleb Adams answered in the bottom half of the second sending a leadoff solo homer over the wall in right to cut the advantage to 2-1. The home run gives Adams 10 on the year as he regained the team lead.

Trey Hicks got the two-run lead back in the top of the third on a single up the middle scoring Granger Studdard from third.

The Bobcats exploded for five runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batter in the top of the fourth to jump out to an 8-1 advantage. A two-run homer by Geisler highlighted the scoring in the inning.

Texas State tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a home run by Mattlage to right to make the score 10-1.

Girouard added a run for the Cajuns in the seventh inning on a single through the left side of the infield scoring Jace Conrad from second.

Conrad brought home the final run of the game in the eighth as he singled in Leonards to make the final 10-3.

Louisiana and Texas State close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the rubber match as the Cajuns look to keep their series win streak alive. Senior Cody Boutte will make the start for the Ragin' Cajuns with a 5-0 record and a 2.91 ERA.
