University of Louisiana at Lafayette professor John Tanner has returned to campus almost six months after nearly losing his life in a bike accident in Texas.
"They took me to the hospital, I was unconscious, they said I coded twice that day, but hey, that was then, this is now," Dr. Tanner said.
The popular professor is well on his way to recovery. After several broken bones and nerve damage, he's now walking on his own. Tanner says ultimately it was support from family, friends and hundreds of students, both current and former, that got him through the many long months in the hospital.
"It was nice of people to spread the word and I want to be here today to spread this word, that I made it through all that, and I'm grateful," Tanner said.
January will mark Tanner's 20th year of teaching at UL Lafayette. He will return to the classroom next semester and so far his two statistics courses are already filling up.
