A community is rallying together to help a dog and her puppies.
The dog, nicknamed Sugar Girl, was caught in a sugar cane fire with her puppies.
She was taken to All Creatures Animal Hospital in New Iberia and had extense surgeries.
Sugar Girl suffered first, second, and third degree burns on her face and ears.
"On presentation alone, I didn't think she had a chance. But now she's trucking along and I have very good feelings about it," said Dr. Chad Richard of All Creatures Animal Hospital.
Three of the puppies survived the fire. They suffered similar injuries, but like their mom, are doing well.
The community rallied together to help pay for her and her puppies' surgery expenses.
"A lot of people have been sending donations and have been very gracious to send donations and at this time her medical expenses are well covered, due to the clinic and donations people have made," said Dr. Richard.
Sugar Girl will be going home to her foster mom in about two weeks. Before that, she will have to go through a few more surgeries. Anyone interested in helping or donating should contact either the New Iberia Humane Society or the All Creatures Animal Hospital.
