The Lafayette Parish School Board added an agenda item to its special meeting for Tuesday evening to talk about the role of its district-attorney provided legal counsel.
According to Board President Shelton Cobb, the presentation is for informational purposes and was placed on the agenda at the request of 15th Judicial District Court District Attorney Mike Harson.
"Mike Harson asked to address the board to speak about legal opinions and how they will be delivered," Cobb said. "It is like an 'advise and consent' session."
Currently, Assistant District Attorney Roger Hamilton serves as the attorney to the school board. In past months, however, both the board and Superintendent Pat Cooper have either contracted or sought to contract their own attorneys to develop legal opinions on various topics.
The board went into executive session at its last meeting after balking at paying $5,100 in fees for Cooper's attorney, Lane Roy of Lafayette.
