BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state health department says it's shutting down oyster harvest areas 1-23, from Lake Borne in St. Bernard Parish to Oyster Bayou in Terrebonne Parish, effective at sunset Friday.
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced the precautionary closure Friday because Tropical Storm Karen could cause flooding in coastal parishes that could cause natural contaminants to be washed into rivers, bayous and streams and ultimately into the oyster-growing areas.
The affected areas will remain closed until such time as state health officials determine the waters are clear and safe for harvesting.
