Deputies identify New Iberia man as driver in early morning, fatal crash

Deputies have identified a New Iberia man as the driver killed in a single-vehicle, fatal crash in New Iberia early this morning.

At 5:35 a.m., deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office responded to the crash in the 4100 block of Leonce Theriot Road. At the scene, emergency personnel observed a vehicle upside down in a ditch and located the body of 29-year-old Joshua Hymel, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Toyota Yaris lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to overtake another vehicle while heading north. Deputies said the Yaris went airborne from the ditch and struck a tree.

Toxicology samples will be sent to the lab for routine testing.
