Cultural District Coming to Opelousas?

Because Opelousas is filled with lots of history and culture, there's a chance it may receive a cultural district.
"We have theatres, we have museums and the wonderful Cajun cuisines and stores and shops and restaurants," says Melanie Lee-Lebouef, Tourism Director.
A stroll around the tourist center, you'll quickly learn fascinating facts about Opelousas, such as where the roots of the funky tunes of Zydeco originated.
Lee-Lebouef says Opelousas is a place passionate about art.
"In downtown Opelousas, we have the Delta Theatre that has a lot of performances there. We have many festivals going on, and of course a lot of art; we have fiddles and murals that surround the courthouse square," Lee-Lebouf.
With so much diversity, she says it only makes sense to push for the historic district to become a cultural district.
"We're an old community but we're so rich in culture, but at the same time we realize the importance of moving forward for economic growth. We're hoping that this designation will attract even more investors and property owners to the area," said Lee-Lebouef.

If Opelousas gets a cultural district, it will join the other 59 cultural districts across the state. The tourism director says Opelousas' application will be submitted in about two weeks.
