Crowley Man Sentenced, Five Years In Jail For Vehicular Homicide

A Crowley man will spend the next five years in prison after driving drunk and killing an 18-year old teenager two years ago.

The family of the victim is outraged over the sentence, and what they consider a slap on the wrist.

Tyson Dupuis pled guilty to vehicular homicide, and was given a ten year sentence by Judge Ed Rubin. However, five of those years are suspended, and after that he can be released on probation for the remaining five years.

In court today, family members had to be restrained when they heard the sentence read out by the judge.

"There is no justice for the victims!" Paula Romero, the mother of the victim Mitchell Romero, said after the sentencing.

Mitchell Romero would have been twenty years old this year. She was killed just months after graduating from Northside Christian School in Crowley.

"If you're in Acadia Parish, you can drink and drive and kill people and only get five years cause it don't matter. Five years, that's what you get," Nicholas Romero, the father of Mitchell, said.

Clutching a picture of their daughter, both parents are reeling over a sentence they feel wasn't tough enough. Dupuis could have received up to 30 years of jail time. The district attorney's office says this was his third time facing DWI charges.

Mitchell did survive the accident in August of 2011, and the family was also told she'd make a full recovery. But just three days following the crash, she collapsed in the hospital and died. Her mother never left her side.

"You can't go on, my family is gone. That's what people don't understand. He took something so precious that we'll never never get back," Paula Romero said.

In addition to jail time, Dupuis will have to pay a two thousand dollar fine, plus 15 thousand dollars in restitution, which includes the funeral arrangements for Mitchell Romero. Dupuis was also ordered to take substance abuse and driver improvement classes.
