The coroner's office reports the cause of death for a Youngsville cyclist involved in a hit-and-run accident is drowning.
Troopers arrested Fitzpatrick Doucette, 42, of Kaplan. Doucette is charged with negligent homicide, felony hit and run, driving under suspension and limitations on passing bicycles.
Lon Lomas was killed on July 7th as he was riding his bicycle along Highway 92 near Mermentau Road. His body was found in a ditch.
Troopers said the incident happened sometime before 7 a.m., but they could not confirm if it was still dark when Lomas was hit.
"Shortly after the crash on LA 92, troopers received information from Kaplan police that a male subject arrived at their police department with a damaged vehicle," Louisiana State Master Trooper Brooks David said.
Trooper David said it was still morning when Doucette went to the Kaplan Police station. But it is unclear whether Doucette realized he actually hit a cyclist.
Trooper David said Doucette didn't mention anything about hitting a bird or animal, simply that he hit something. Investigators took possession of Mr. Doucette's vehicle the morning of the crash, but let him go back home.
"Through evidence on scene, evidence of the vehicle and interviewing Mr. Doucette, troopers got an arrest warrant and placed Mr. Doucette under arrest last night," Trooper David said.
Troopers said Doucette was then taken to the Lafayette Parish jail.
