NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Construction of the surge barrier along the
Gulf Intracoastal Waterway will result in the closing of the canal
to vessel traffic at the surge barrier for 45 hours next week, the
Army Corps of Engineers said.
The corps said the canal will close at 3 a.m. CDT on June 22 and
is expected to remain closed until midnight June 24.
The closing will allow crews to test-fit a barge gate and
conduct a training exercise at the barrier, which is being built to
protect New Orleans and surrounding communities from storm surge
pushed inland by hurricanes approaching from the Gulf of Mexico.
