The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, Marathon Oil, Restore America's Estuaries, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are looking for volunteers to help restore and protect beach dunes at Elmer's Island on Grand Isle.
Recent hurricanes have damaged many of the dunes along the shoreline. Experts say the dunes are critical to the protection of wetlands and the inland communities. Project organizers say volunteers will plant more than 12,000 plugs of dune grass which helps stabilize the beach along Grand Isle, the state's only inhabited barrier island.
The project will be held in conjunction with National Estuaries Day on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
