Acadia Parish- Yesterday, February 23, 2010, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash on I-10 near milepost 85 that claimed the life of a Church Point man.
Killed in the crash was eighteen year old Benjamin Guidry of Church Point. Guidry was killed when the vehicle he was traveling in crossed the eastbound lanes, traveled through the median, proceeded across the westbound lanes and struck a large tree. Guidry was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The Acadia Parish Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to the investigating troopers from Troop I, on February 23, 2010, shortly before 4:30 p.m. seventeen year old Brennen Sonnier of Church Point was traveling in the right lane eastbound on I-10 in a 2000 Honda Accord. A 1998 Volks Wagon driven by thirty two year old Megan Collum of San Antonio, TX was traveling in front of Sonnier. Sonnier approach Collum's vehicle from the rear and struck the right rear corner of her car. After impact, Sonnier ran off of the road to the left and crossed the median, and westbound lanes of travel. Sonnier's vehicle struck several large trees on the north side of the interstate. Sonnier sustained moderate injures and was transported to a local area hospital. A second passenger in the vehicle, seventeen year old Aaron Richard of Branch, was critically injured in the crash. Collum was not injured in the crash.
Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind drivers that state law requires you to wear seatbelt anytime you travel in a motor vehicle.
