Chinese New Year in Lafayette

There was plenty on the menu today to celebrate the "Year of the Snake".
A wide array of traditional Chinese dishes were served up as students took to the stage at Alice Boucher Elementary School.
They performed Kung-Fu and sang songs all to the delight of the audience.
The Chinese Immersion program was instituted back in 2009, and its popularity is growing.
Members of the Chinese community have volunteered with the school to provide the students an even more enriching learning experience.
Parents say even though French is an integral part of living in Louisiana, the chance for their children to learn Chinese is too good to pass up.
Michelle Fontenot, parent of a student at Alice Boucher, says "French and Spanish are offered in high school and offered at most universities. But Chinese is something you don't find very often for your children to learn at a very young age."
The Lafayette Chinese American Association is looking for donations to help purchase more books for the program. If you'd like to help or would like to know more, contact George Pang at 337-989-1855.
