Chemical Residue In Bayou Mallet?

There's still concern in Lawtell over the chemicals that spilled last week when a Union Pacific train derailed.

Several residents in Lawtell said they're seeing an unfamiliar residue in Bayou Mallet.

One resident, Allen Guillory, said the Department of Homeland Security and officials from St. Landry Parish government came to his property to check out the residue, and promised someone from the Department of Environmental Quality would come to investigate.

He said it's frustrating not knowing exactly what is the residue.

"They're not telling us what the chemicals are. You know this could be something that's harmful for me, maybe my neighbors, their kids, and my thing is you know, we need to know what we're dealing with so we know how to deal with it," Lawtell resident Allen Guillory said.

D.E.Q officials have not confirmed whether or not the residue came from the chemicals that spilled during last week's train derailment. Residents will have to wait and see what the investigation reveals.
