Changes to Lafayette Parish schools cell phone policy tabled

The student cell phone ban at all Lafayette Parish schools is still intact after policy changes were tabled at a Lafayette Parish School Board meeting tonight.

Assistant Superintendent Sandra Billeaudeau asked the board to postpone discussion about the cell phone policy until issues raised by a teacher group are settled.

Right now, students are not permitted to use cell phones or have them "visible or audible" during the school day.

The proposed policy would keep a cell phone ban at elementary schools, but allow high and middle school students to have phones on campus.

Middle school students would not be allowed to use phones without permission from a school administrator.

High school students, meanwhile, would be allowed to use phones outside of school buildings before and after school and during lunch. The proposed policy would also let high school teachers allow phone use during class.

The next regular school board meeting is set for Aug. 6. Students return to school on Aug. 12.
