Challenges Facing School Superintendents

School superintendents from across Acadiana met at the Acadiana Press Club luncheon today to discuss the challenges facing their respective districts.

Lafayette Parish Superintendent Pat Cooper, Iberia Parish Superintendent Dale Henderson, St. Martin Parish Superintendent Lottie Beebe, Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau, and Acadia Parish Superintendent John Bourque all attended the discussion and agreed the introduction of the common core curriculum is getting the bulk of their attention, with finding experienced teachers to fill vacancies a close second.

Superintendent Beebe also says the PARC assessment being used this year is harder than the Leap or ILeap testing, which creates an additional challenge for educators..

"Its setting school systems up for failure," Beebe says.

Cooper says change is coming, no matter what other hurdles superintendents might face.

"I'm trying to work with the State Department of Education as opposed to being against them or enemies," Cooper says. "I believe that everybody is trying to do the right thing; we all want our kinds to excel, and so there's a point in the middle where we can meet. I believe that."
