Carencro murder case ends in mistrial

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - In Lafayette, the two-day trial of a 21-year-old Carencro man charged in a July 2009 shooting death has ended in a mistrial.
Judge Jules D. Edwards III declared a mistrial Thursday in the second-degree murder trial of Troydell Simmons. The ruling came after prosecutor Pat Magee, while questioning Simmons, raised allegations that Simmons had engaged in homosexual activity with another inmate while in jail.
Simmons was never charged in connection with that allegation and Edwards ruled that the allegation would affect the jury's ability to render a fair verdict.
The 21-year-old Simmons is charged in the shooting 41-year-old Mark Boutin once in the head with a 9 mm handgun during the early morning of July 2, 2009.
