Car Burglary Suspects Attempt to Strike Officer with Car
On November 26, 2009, at approximately 11:15 pm, officers with the Lafayette Police Department were patrolling the parking lot of the downtown library when they came upon a vehicle burglary in progress. The suspect jumped into a waiting vehicle and attempted to flee the lot. Officers gave the suspects verbal commands to stop, at which time the suspect vehicle drove in the direction of the officers. One the officer's was nearly struck and fired one shot from his weapon, striking the front of the suspect vehicle. After a short vehicle and foot pursuit, the passenger of the vehicle was apprehended. The driver of the vehicle was apprehended a short time later. Neither the officers nor the suspects were injured during the incident. Property from the car burglaries was recovered from the interior of the suspect vehicle.
Jacque Gatewood (19) was arrested and charged with 2 counts of Simple Burglary of an Auto and Principle to Attempted 1st Degree Murder.
Spencer Thomas (20) was arrested and charged with 2 counts of Principle to Simple Burglary of an Auto and Attempted 1st Degree Murder.
The case remains under investigation by the Lafayette Police Departments Criminal Investigations Division.
