LORMAN, Miss. - Lavinia Tataran recorded a match-high 11 kills and the Louisiana volleyball team posted its best hitting percentage of the season as it defeated Alcorn State, 25-15, 25-11, 25-13 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday at the Dave Whitney Athletic Complex.
Kelly Wiesmann added seven kills for the Ragin' Cajuns (3-1) while Tonice White had six. Kaylee Nemeth posted five kills for Louisiana, which hit .375 for the match including a .542 mark (15-2-24) in the opening set.
Andrea Hole tallied 23 assists and recorded three of Louisiana's season-high 11 service aces. Caitlyn Auxilien led the Ragin' Cajuns with 10 digs while freshman Chanelle Gardner had three blocks.
Louisiana used a 6-0 run in the opening set to pull away from a 3-3 tie. Alcorn State (0-1) chipped away at the lead, closing to 16-13, but a service error by the Braves, a pair of kills by Tataran, three kills by Wiesmann and a kill by Abby Filce helped Louisiana push its lead to 23-14.
The Ragin' Cajuns were never threatened in the second set, building a 9-1 lead. Taylor Meade, Tataran and Auxilien each recorded aces in the set while Nemeth added a solo block.
Louisiana kept up its momentum into the final set as it stormed out to an 8-1 lead before pushing its advantage to 15-5 after an attack error by Alcorn's Katelyn Quiring. Tataran and Nemeth combined for seven kills and a .462 average in the final set for Louisiana, which improved to 8-2 against the Braves all-time.
Georgia Parsons led Alcorn State with five kills while Sydney Mellom had 11 assists.
Louisiana will return to action on Friday when it opens play in the inaugural Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic. The Ragin' Cajuns will face Nicholls State in a 7 p.m. contest at Earl K. Long Gym before resuming action on Saturday against Alcorn State (12 p.m.) and Houston (6 p.m.).
