LAFAYETTE, La. - The second-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team opens a five-game week with a home-and-home series against Southeastern Louisiana starting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Hammond, La., at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Cajuns (39-6, 18-3 Sun Belt) and Lions (27-17, 12-9 Southland) meet again the following day at 6 p.m. at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
Louisiana is coming off of a 3-1 week where the team posted a pair of shutouts and took two of three from Texas State over the weekend to win its 12th consecutive weekend series win.
The Ragin' Cajuns remained second in the USA Today Coaches poll and the Perfect Game rankings and third in both the Baseball America and NCBWA rankings. The squad dropped three spots in the Collegiate Baseball poll from third to sixth.
Junior Caleb Adams leads the team in hitting with a .390 average, 12 doubles, six home runs, 10 home runs and 30 RBI. Adams is second in the nation in slugging (.760) and third in on base percentage (.511).
As a team, Louisiana is hitting .321 with 103 doubles, 24 triples, 51 home runs and 334 RBI. The Cajuns rank in the top 50 nationally in 18 categories.
Senior Matt Hicks will make the start on Tuesday, while Wednesday's starter has yet to be determined. Hicks is 5-0 on the year with a 1.86 ERA in 29 innings. The Bridge City, Texas native threw five scoreless innings with five strikeouts in his last outing combining with Ben Carter to shutout McNeese State.
The Cajuns had a trio of players named to watch lists over the weekend as Blake Trahan was named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list, while Carson Baranik and Ryan Wilson were named to the 2014 Pitcher of the Year watch list by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Louisiana holds a 59-46 edge in the all-time series having won the last two meetings between the two teams. The Lions (7-4) had won nine straight before losing both contests in 2013.
Southeastern Louisiana has lost four straight coming into the week after being swept at Sam Houston State over the weekend in three closely contested games.
The Lions are led by Jameson Fisher who is hitting .360 on the season with 10 doubles and 26 RBI. Andrew Godbold is second on the squad with a .323 average and a team-best six home runs and 40 RBI.
Following the home-and-home with Southeastern, the Cajuns head to Jonesboro, Ark. to face Arkansas State in a three-game series that matches the top two teams in the Sun Belt.
