Cajun Maritime seeking $420,000 tax refund from Vermilion Parish School Board

An oil and gas company in Abbeville is suing the Vermilion Parish School Board for more than $400,000 in sales taxes that the business claims it overpaid.

According to the lawsuit, Cajun Maritime LLC, which is owned by Cajun Industries LLC, filed refund claims to the Vermilion Parish School Board beginning in 2010 due to an internal audit that showed certain sales taxes paid by Cajun Maritime were exempt.

The lawsuit states that the school board allowed $22,141 in tax refunds to Cajun Maritime, but disallowed $419, 685 in refunds to the company.

Cajun subsequently requested a hearing with the school board and had several informal meetings in an effort to settle, the lawsuit states.

In March 2013, the school board sent Cajun Maritime a letter stating that the remaining refund claims would not be honored.
