Bus Driver Speaks About Horrific Accident, Public Reaching Out To Help

"Basically out of nowhere this vehicle appeared. Within the second I saw it, it was sideways," bus driver Amy Dore said.

It was a bus drive like so many others for Dore. While driving the Lafayette High school baseball team to a scrimmage, the unthinkable happened right before her eyes.

"I guess god was with us and we came to a safe landing. It wasn't the easiest but I held onto it," Dore said.

Dore says she doesn't remember much after the impact, but she does remember holding the wheel tightly thinking about the kids on her bus. She says the kids were her number one priority. The wife and mother of three, luckily walked away from the accident with only a cut on her knee and some bruises.

At this time, she is taking time off from behind the wheel, but getting a new bus is proving to be difficult. As sole owner-operator of her bus, she has put more than $80,000 of her money into it. Even when the insurance check arrives, she says she'll have to start over.

"All bus drivers take pride, but my name is on that bus. It stayed clean, it stayed waxed. It was mine and I won't get it back."

With a difficult road ahead, she says she is beyond thankful for the outpouring of support for her and her family.

"I hopefully will get back soon and kind of go on with life, but it's a tragedy that's not going to be forgotten," Dore said.

Officials say a tire blow out caused an SUV to swerve into oncoming traffic where it hit the school bus head on. Four of five people in the SUV were killed in the accident. Everyone on the bus escaped with minor to moderate injuries.
