Bullying in Lafayette Schools

The recent spotlight on bullying cases across the nation may have you questioning how safe your child is in the Lafayette Parish School System.

Maxine Hamilton, the Safe and Drug Free Schools Supervisor in Lafayette, said "We're seeing bullying incidents with young kids basically from kindergarten through 12th grade."

Lafayette High School principal, Patrick Leonard, has been working in the school system for 41 years and says bullying has taken on a new form.

"Bullying was more physical and verbal, but now it's not necessarily what you say, it just may be an action or the body language that you use," he said.

The school board doesn't of a clear cut definition of the term bullying, it's divided into two areas-incidents are recorded as either harassment or threats.

Harassment includes intimidation, bullying, hazing and harmful gossip. A threat includes the verbal intent to harm someone, a fear in the victim and how capable the bully actually is of carrying out that threat.

Hamilton said, "it's a combination of face-to-face, online the twitter...it's all of it."

These types of bullying happen at almost all of the 43 schools in the parish, but some schools stand out more than others.

Alice Boucher leads the elementary schools with 33 harassment and threat complaints so far this year, and Ossun follows close behind with 29. Duson, J.W. Faulk, J.W. James and Green T. Lindon all have no incidents.

When it comes to middle schools, Carencro has the highest with 43 incidents. N.P. Moss follows behind with 39 and the lowest is E.A. Martin with two.

Acadiana leads the high schools with 43 incidents, Carencro has 24, Comeaux 15, Lafayette and Northside have the lowest at nine.

Leonard said, "We have two jobs, one is to give you an education, and the other one is to keep you safe."
