BRPD hosts police mountain bike association

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The 23rd annual International Police Mountain Bike Association Conference is being held at the Baton Rouge River Center through Saturday.

Baton Rouge police spokesman Don Kelley says more than 200 instructors from more than 15 states, Canada and Australia are attending training classes and workshops designed to teach public safety workers how to work safely and effectively on bicycles.

Instructor and maintenance classes that began this past Saturday are described as pre-conference events. The conference's opening ceremony is Thursday.

Workshops beginning Thursday range from administrative issues of a bike unit to the Israeli Defense Forces' self-defense system called Krav Maga for public safety cyclists.

There's also a bicycle parade form the River Center to the levee near the USS Kidd on Friday afternoon, and a riding competition Friday evening.
