Bossier Sheriff's Office gets DWI grant

BENTON, La. (AP) - The Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office has been awarded a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to help with DWI enforcement.

The $14,040 grant will be used to provide extra enforcement of impaired driving laws in order to reduce fatal and injury crashes on Louisiana roads through Sept. 30, 2014.

Sheriff Julian Whittington said in a news release Wednesday that the money will allow the office to increase patrols and checkpoints and ultimately keep the roads safe for all drivers.

The highway commission says there were 722 traffic fatalities in Louisiana last year, and 40 percent, or 289, were estimated to be alcohol related.
