Blaze Destroys Historic Building

Flames, smoke, and water ripped through the historic 100 year old Aurora Masonic Lodge building which also houses the Louisiana Medical Supply Company in New Iberia.

"All I could see was smoke then, there were no flames protruding from the building, but then it didn't take long for the windows to be busted out on the third floor," said witness Dorsey Dutil, a lodge member.

The Masons wrapped up their meeting just thirty minutes before the building went up in flames. They say they are losing a great part of their history.

"One of our members had a picture of President Gerald Ford who was a Mason, and it was in the lodge. We also have a picture of every past master in the lodge, but that is all gone now," Dutil said.

Bricks scattered the alley near the lodge, because fire officials say that as the building heated up, the structure became weaker causing a partial collapse of the building.

"Once we got here and realized nobody was in the building and everybody was ok we thought it is just a building even though it is 100 years old," said a witness.

The building is a piece of history that many will never forget in the community.
