Bill Would Revamp School Board

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Baton Rouge lawmaker is back again

this year with his proposals to revamp local school board laws by

limiting board members' authority and their elected terms.

Republican Rep. Steve Carter of Baton Rouge has tweaked the

bills after they didn't make it out of the House a year ago. He

says he hopes the changes will help garner support for the ideas.

For instance, a bill last year that would have enacted term

limits on all local school board members was changed so this time

it would require elections in each school district to determine

whether term limits should be imposed in the district.

Also this time, Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek hasn't

been pushing the bills. That could be considered helpful since

Pastorek has a somewhat contentious relationship with the

Legislature.
